Topdon Tornado 1200 battery charger

Just bought this and thought id do review on it, its very well built and well designed so if it charges batteries its going to be excellent.

Its plastic with a rubberised coating to outisde so rugged and drop proof its IP rated to IP65 which means accidental spillages and rain for a short peroid so excellent for workshop use and ocaasinal outdoor work if needed.

The base has 4 screw holes in it so could be mounted on a table in a battery repair area or mounted to the garage wall near a motorbike or car to trickle charge the battery.

The leads are very long so no worries about reaching the vehicle iff needed and the positive lead has fused protection, the best thing about this charger are the clips these clips are the best i have ever seen on a charger, they have excellent grip and make a tight secure connection as well as being heavy duty and long lasting.

The charger has 4 settings 6v and 12v AGM batteries and Lithium Batteries so covers most newer and older tyoes of battery

Top 5 car A/C air conditioning common issues faults and easy fixes

A/C auto air con common faults and fixes , check A/C is on and the light or AC on sign is present if not there could be something wrong with switches or the climate control panel, ensure blower is set to mid point as sometimes AC will not turn on otherwise , will the clutch engage on compressor if so you know the electrics work and fuse/relay are good , if not check the compresssor solenoid relay , check fuse , it could also be sensor so check the pressure sensor , and is is there gas in the system ?

Car auto A/C air conditioning Vacuuming down system prior to recharging - leaking testing

The system has to be recovered prior to doing this, if you system is empty all ready your ok as you have no R134a in the system otherwise have the system recovered and reuse the R134a gas that was in your system.

Next set up your A/C Manifold gauges as usual , connect high a low pressure quick fit connectors and make sure all connections are tight and not leaking . 

Then connect the yellow centre hose to your vacuum pump, this vacuum pump has a solenoid valve to hold the vacuum well even after turning the pump off.

And below the vacuum pump with built in solenoid

When you turn the pump on you may see mist come out of the outlet of the pump, the blue lid. This is the moisture from inside the system being evacuated and burned off under vacuum.

Pull the vacuum down to -30 PSI and then turn machine off the solenoid will hold the seal, your system must hold a vacuum for 30 mins at least if not you have a leak and continuing would be a waste of time.

If you hold a seal then its good to progress, you need to turn on the pump and let it keep pumping for 45 mins to completely evacuate and burn off any moisture within the system. 

Then turn it off and let the vacuum hold for another 45mins to make sure the system is perfectly evacuated and ready to top up, any moisture or air in the system will negatively affect the air conditioning so its important to take these steps. 

The gauge on the vacuum pump on this unit is in mbar and very sensitive to pressure changes making it much more visible to see even minor leaks.

Car auto air conditioning adding oil to system and how much

You can test your system to see how much oil in present see our post here 

You can find the specs for your car and it will tell you the amount of refrigerant needed and the amount of oil needed.

If you recover the refrigerant from the system and change a component within the system then you need to add oil here is a rough guide to amounts of oil needed.

Major system leak ( empty gas ) 1.5 fluid oz

Minor system leak ( pressure switch shut off compressor ) 0.5 oz

Accumulator  1.5 oz

Condenser  1 oz

Evaporator   1 oz

Receiver drier    0.5 oz 

Hoses  0.5 oz 

compressor  measure the amount of oil internal to compressor and replace this into system in new compressor ( typical 2 oz )

Car auto Air conditioning electrical testing

First I go into the car and ensure the Air con is on and the blower is on at least halfway, I now check the compressor to ensure the clutch has engaged and that the pulley is turning the compressor. If the compressor is on and working you can assume the electrics are pretty much good.

If the compressor does not on then you need to fault find.

Firstly id check the pressure in the system as without pressure the pressure switch will not allow compressor clutch engagement.

If pressure is good id now look for the relay that controls the compressor clutch operation you can test the control side of the relay for power and ground if you have both you can be assured that all the controls in the car are fine  if not you need to look at the climate control panel internally, these can be replaced as one unit.

Now you can test the load side of the relay which is the compressors clutch, you can load the circuit with 12v to see if the clutch operates if it does its all fine if not you need to replace the compressor clutch solenoid. see our post of this here
